Mecca did not exist in the early seventh century and probably also the eighth century. The earliest map showing it dates from the ninth century. Earlier maps show no mention of Mecca. Mecca was probably invented along with the Qur'an, based on Petra which closely resembles Muslim descriptions of Mecca.
CIRA International on is a vast series of studies on the history of Islam , Mohammed and the Koran. I suspect some aspects will differ, but well worth a listen.p and lots to learn.
